Hey, good news! After spending the entire summer paralyzed from a back injury, Landry, my basset hound, is walking again. He can even run a bit. The old boy will always have a pronounced limp because he did not regain much feeling in one of his rear legs, but I’m going to invent an exciting tale about his weak leg, one he can tell to strangers in bars.
Something like, “He was dragging children out of a burning house when a glowing, hot timber fell on his leg. He managed to get himself and the last child out of danger, but he was scarred for life.”

That’s great news, Leanne. I was worried about the old boy. He’s a great dog.
We’ve been going through some dog issues, too, Crystal, our almost 14-year-old Cocker, has a deteriorating heart and some short of thyroid problem. New meds (at a mere $2/day) really have helped her. She’s back to her old land shark ways. Kesey, our old collie, is senile and having bad hip problems. But upping his dose of Rimadyl has made him much better, even if he still has no idea where he is, where he’s going or why he is where he is.
great news, leanne! i love the idea of giving him a hero story to brag about to his buddies.
our pups have been healthy of late tho our vet tried to switch gypsy to rimadyl for her arthritis. he claimed that they quit making arquel which she’s been taking for years. after spending $60 for a one month supply, i found arquel on the internet for $.20/daily dose. he couldn’t very well back off his original assertion so he had to give me a prescription… but it did make me lose trust in my vet. bob, can you use the rimadyl (75 mg)? i never even opened it.
Yes, I can use the 75mg tabs. Kesey is taking 100mg twice a day. He’s in pretty bad shape, and the Rimadyl really helps him.
As for the Internet, I had the same experience w/ my vet. They were way overcharging me. They also weren’t telling me when there were generic options available. I spend a hell of a lot on doggie drugs. And vet bills. I was disappointed that the vet was so mercenary.
I now get all my pet meds online.

My vet has used a drug called Adequan on my arthritic dogs and it has been like a miracle. It added several good years to the life of my late basset hound, Zeke. The drug is an injection intended for horses and has not been approved for use in dogs, but my vet figures dogs don’t have long enough lifespans to worry much about possible side effects. (My vet is an utter nonconformist, a New Mexico mix of hippie unorthodoxy and common sense.) Adequan helps the dog’s joints regrow the cushioning cartilige that arthritis destroys. I highly recommend it if you can get your hands on it online.
unfortunately, my vet is a boston-bred, totally by the book kinda guy. he even threatened to stop treating my pups if i ever cried “wolf” in front of him again. ‘seems pennsylvania law is really weird concerning lupines. i think he’s a good vet but i wouldn’t even consider asking him about anything “off the books” again. since he doesn’t treat large animals, it would look pretty weird too. all of our other local vets are true country vets with limited experience with pets. that’s great that you have found the happy medium, leanne! a good vet is priceless.
